Going to your first well-woman exam can feel a little intimidating, but knowing what to expect can make all the difference in easing your nerves. Whether you're going for preventive care or to address a specific concern, a well-woman exam is an essential part of maintaining your overall health.
And you’re in great hands with the team at Jon T. Ricks, MD, in Frisco, Texas. Dr. Ricks considers your well-woman exam an essential part of maintaining your overall health. With his personalized gynecology care and our breakdown of what you can expect during your visit, you’re one step closer to better prioritizing your health.
Why a well-woman is important
First and foremost, a well-woman exam is more than just a routine check-up; it’s a comprehensive assessment of your reproductive and overall health. These exams are key to catching potential issues early and ensuring that you stay healthy at every stage of life.
Preventive care
Regular exams can help detect issues like cervical cancer, breast cancer, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) before they become more serious.
Reproductive and sexual health
We discuss your menstrual cycle, birth control, and family planning, answering your questions and addressing any concerns you have about your sexual health.
Health screenings
Depending on your age, we may recommend additional screenings, such as a mammogram.
What to expect during your exam
Understanding what happens during a well-woman exam can make the process a lot less overwhelming. Dr. Ricks guides you through each step, ensuring that you’re comfortable and informed along the way.
Medical history review
The exam typically begins with a conversation about your medical history. This includes a discussion about your menstrual cycle, your lifestyle and sexual activity, and any symptoms you’re experiencing.
Physical exam
The physical part of the exam includes checking your vital signs, such as blood pressure and heart rate. You undress and wear a gown so Dr. Ricks can examine your abdomen, breasts, and pelvis.
A manual breast exam involves checking for lumps or issues in your breast tissue. This is an essential part of early breast cancer detection.
During the pelvic exam, you lie back on the table with your feet positioned so you can spread your legs in order for Dr. Ricks to examine your external and internal reproductive organs. This includes a visual and manual inspection, as well as taking a sample of cells for a Pap smear to screen for cervical cancer.
What comes after a well-woman exam?
If you had a Pap smear or other tests, Dr. Ricks explains how and when you’ll receive the results. Our team discusses the findings with you and outlines any next steps. You might need additional tests or a follow-up visit, or you can make your appointment for your next annual exam.
Don’t hesitate to reach out to Dr. Ricks if you have any questions or concerns after the exam.
